Our firefighters would like to remind you that summer means campfire season, but please always be responsible for your fires. The primary cause of wildfires in New Hampshire is illegal or improperly maintained fires.

- Thanks and Congratulations
The Town wishes to thank outgoing Chief Mike Boutilier for his many years of service to the Town of Cornish. Mike ran a great department that is the envy of many local volunteer departments. His countless hours of volunteer service, duty, and responsibility cannot be accurately reflected in this short statement. Chief Boutilier resigned effective March 31. The Board of Selectmen wish him a happy retirement and thank him for his dedication and service.
Congratulations to Chief Bill Harthan, who was sworn in as Cornish Fire Chief on April 2. Chief Harthan was recommended highly by former Chiefs Mike Boutilier and Bob Rice. Chief Harthan has served on the Cornish Volunteer Fire Department since 1989 and has been a firefighter since 1979. His experience and knowledge is unrivaled. We look forward to working with Chief Harthan as he continues to improve the Department.
- BURN PERMITS ARE NOW REQUIRED FOR ALL BURNS.
Due to the loss of snow coverage in most of town, Fire Permits are now required for all outdoor burns. Fire Permits may be obtained from any of the wardens.
Thank you,
Mike Boutilier, Cornish Fire Chief, Fire Warden

Burn Permits
Per NH Division of Forests and Lands, any size fire is subject to the law, specifically RSA 227-L:17(II):
“Anyone who wishes to burn clean, ordinary combustibles such as leaves, brush or untreated lumber, or have a camp or cooking fire must have written permission from the landowner and a fire permit from the local forest fire warden or local fire department in the town or city where the fire will be kindled. You must be at least 18 years of age to obtain a written fire permit.”
Permits are not required for gas or charcoal grills.
For more about our state’s Fire Permit Laws please see the NH Division of Forests and Lands Wildland Fire Prevention.
